About:

In partnership with Youth in Focus, the Seattle Japanese Garden is pleased to host our 5th annual youth photography workshops in the Garden. Student photographers from grades 8 through 12, are invited to come and learn about the Japanese stroll garden, tea ceremony and how to create inspiring images for our community.

With photography instructor Joy Strange from Youth in Focus, you will expand your knowledge of operating DSLR cameras, photo composition and storytelling through taking photographs in the Garden.

At the end of the workshop, you will submit one picture to be printed and framed. Your framed print will be showcased in the Tateuchi Community Room at the Seattle Japanese Garden for the months of May and June.

Instructor: Joy Strange (she/her)

Joy believes that we're all made to create. To experience the world in a one-of-a-kind way, and to affect it just as uniquely.

She defines an artist as anyone brave enough to set out on the adventure of finding ways to communicate the story of what life is like experienced from the view behind their eyes.

In 1998, Youth In Focus empowered her with a completely new language, unlocking a world of new ways to express the tangled mess of her teenage thoughts and emotions, igniting a life-long passion for "writing with light", and shaping the trajectory of the rest of her life.

Throughout the ensuing 27-year journey, both photography and YIF continue to be her wonder-filled home base and safe space for exploration and inspiration.

It is her absolute honor to be a part of the latest iteration of the Youth In Focus family, helping to fan the artist's flame that glows within each teen fortunate enough to find their way to YIF's incredibly special perch at the Treehouse.
