FAQ: Visitor Etiquette

Where am I allowed to go in the Garden?

The Seattle Japanese Garden is a unique, Japanese-style stroll garden. Once you enter the gate, you may follow the paths and enjoy the various views expanding in front of you. Generally, off-path areas are for display only. Think of the Garden as a living museum, in which we carefully maintain the moss, grass, plants, trees, ponds, carps, turtles, rocks, and stone lanterns. These features are meant to be enjoyed without touching. Currently under renovation, the meadow area on the west side of the pond is closed.

Can I come to photograph the Garden?

No. While visitors are allowed to take informal photographs commemorating their visit, we request that you do not come to the Garden with the express purpose of photographing the displays and scenery. When taking a photo, please do so quickly so that you are not blocking other visitors on the trail. Professional photography is not allowed in the Garden; however, we do offer a Photographer’s Annual Pass (for more information, speak to a cashier at the Garden Gatehouse).

Can I bring my pet?

No. Pets are not allowed in the Garden, even if kept in a carrier or bag. Service animals are permitted in accordance with 2010 ADA Revised Requirements.

Can I come in a wheelchair?

Yes. The Garden has a system of mostly level gravel paths and paved areas. However, a few sections are not accessible by wheelchair. Please be careful and enjoy your visit!

Can I eat food in the Garden?

No. Food and most beverages are not allowed in the Garden. Water is the only liquid that you can bring with you. Please do not have a picnic in the Garden.

Can I have a wedding in the Garden?

No. The Garden is not available as a wedding venue, and we do not offer wedding service.

Can I fly a drone?

No. As per City of Seattle policy, drone use is not allowed in any City of Seattle parks, including the Seattle Japanese Garden.

Photography Policy

To preserve a tranquil experience for all visitors, we do not allow tripods or specialized photography equipment (including props, costumes, lighting, and reflectors) during regular garden hours. Formal photo shoots are also prohibited. Examples include promotional, wedding, fashion, prom, graduation, maternity, family, and individual portrait photography. No exceptions please. In addition, photography-related clothing and costume changes are not allowed. In general, professional photography and specialized amateur photography are not allowed in the Garden; however, we do offer a Photographer’s Annual Pass (for more information, speak to a cashier at the Garden Gatehouse).

PLEASE HELP PRESERVE A REGIONAL TREASURE!

Please refrain from any behavior that may harm the Garden’s plant collection and landscape features. Over the years, we have witnessed instances of careless behavior such as visitors trampling moss and other plants and photographers climbing trees. A lot of time and effort goes into maintaining the Garden for all to enjoy. Please be thoughtful and respectful during your visit and help us to care for this unique regional and community resource. If you see anyone breaking the rules, please report them to one of our staff members.
