The Art of Maintenance

Each year, more than 100,000 visitors find solace in the Garden’s refined landscapes. But few witness the quiet devotion the gardeners, artisans, and Chado practitioners bring to pruning, setting stones, mending bamboo fences, or preparing the tea house to receive guests.

At the Garden, maintenance isn’t mere upkeep; it’s how cultural knowledge is passed from mentor to apprentice. As designer Juki Iida, famously remarked to the original steward, Dick Yamasaki, "No matter how beautifully a garden is designed, all that is lost without proper and timely care.”

Your gift today helps sustain ongoing mentorship and essential materials for the next year—and for the generation of Garden stewards to come. By designating your support for the Seattle Japanese Garden, you help preserve a living work of art and honor the hands that shape the Garden.

No matter how beautifully a garden is designed, all that is lost without proper and timely care.
