Respect for Elders Day is a traditional public holiday in Japan celebrated in mid-September. This day focuses on families and appreciation for our elders.
At the Seattle Japanese Garden, Unit 86, a volunteer organization of guides, is providing activities for this special day:
At the entrance, visitors will be welcomed with an origami crane from 10am to 2pm.
In the azumaya, the covered shelter adjacent to the orchard, traditional Japanese folk stories will be read with accompanying illustration boards by Unit 86 garden guides. The storytelling will be every 30 minutes starting at 11am.
At the East Gate, visitors can try their hands at folding a koi origami with our guides.
Also, at the East Gate, ‘Ask-a-Guide’: Guides will be available to answer questions you may have about the Japanese Garden.
Please join us!
Free admission to all youth 12 and younger and seniors from 10am - 2pm for Family Saturday and Respect for Elders Day.
